MRSA: Understanding and Controlling Acquired Infection

All staff that work in healthcare sector – Hospitals, Schools, & Care Homes etc.


The Government is applying targets for the reduction in the number of deaths complicated by infection and NHS Hospital Trusts, Primary Care Trusts & Nursing & Social Care Organisations are keen to ensure that staff is well-informed and trained to control Cross – Infection.

The aim is to:


Candidates who take this programme will be able to Assess Risks & control the spread of MRSA “the Super Bug”, as well as understand Causes, Symptoms & Prevention of Acquired Infections.


The qualifications has 3 Mandatory Units:

1. The Agents of Infection - Bacteria, Pathogens, Viruses, Common Viral, Fungal & Bacterial Illnesses & infections.

2. Transmission of Pathogens, Infection, Prevention & Control: Chain of Infection, Portals of Entry & Exit; Standard Precautions & Control Measures; Personal Hygiene & Effective Hand Washing (Ayliffe Technique; Workplace & Environmental Hygiene; PPE; Policies & Procedures for disposal of waste & Sharps etc.

3. MRSA – Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus - Colonisation, Signs & different Strains; Prevention & Control including use of Isolation Unit; Standard Precautions; DH criteria for identifying MRSA; Legislation & Regulations & RIDDOR.


Can be delivered within the workplace as a blended learning programme, or a classroom based workshops / course. Candidates work through the learning materials and complete activities & assessments for each unit as part of building up an essential portfolio of evidence. Learning activities and assessments are based on a combination of knowledge and skills learned on the course content and work based activities and experience.

DURATION: Flexible

ASSESSMENT: Successful completion of 3 simple tutor marked assessments, & few activities

PREREQUISITE: None - No prior knowledge or experience is essential for programme.

OUTCOME: Level 2 Certificate in Understanding & Controlling Acquired Infection
